Pops was the third out of five children born in his family, with two older brothers and two younger sisters making him the middle child of the family. When Pops was just one his father left for four years as he served as a pilot during World War Two. This made Pops very close with his brothers as they would help take care of him while growing up.
Education was hard for Pops as he did not learn to read until fifth grade. However he took passion in many jobs across Gulfport such as a paper route throughout the town. In high school he played football and upon graduation would join the Army for three years. After his service was up he would attend the University of Southern Mississippi.
After graduating college Pops took a job with IBM in New Orleans where he would meet his wife Dianne. After their marriage they would move to Jackson, Mississippi, then to their home til today in Winston Salem, North Carolina. They have three kids, Rob, Scott and Jamie, who all attended the University of North Carolina, and nine grandkids total between their children, ranging in age from 22 to 11.
